ZFS's combination of the volume manager and the file system solves this and allows the creation of many file systems all sharing a pool of available storage. One of the biggest advantages to ZFS's awareness of the physical layout of the disks is that existing file systems can be grown automatically when additional disks are added to the pool. ZFS is a combined file system and logical volume manager designed and implemented by a team at Sun Microsystems led by Jeff Bonwick and Matthew Ahrens. Its development started in 2001 and it was officially announced in 2004. In 2005 it was integrated into the main trunk of Solaris and released as part of OpenSolaris. ZFS is scalable, and includes extensive protection against data corruption, support for high storage capacities, efficient data compression, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair, RAID-Z, native NFSv4 ACLs, and can be very precisely configured.
ZFS is a type of file system presenting a pooled storage model that is provided by Oracle for Solaris. File systems can directly draw from a common storage pool (zpool). Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) can be used on the same system as ZFS disks.
VxVM protects devices in use by ZFS from any VxVM operations that may overwrite the disk. These operations include initializing the disk for use by VxVM or encapsulating the disk. If you attempt to perform one of these VxVM operations on a device that is in use by ZFS, VxVM displays an error message.

Where c#t#d#s# is the disk slice on which the ZFS device is configured. If the whole disk is used as the ZFS device, clear the signature block on slice 0.
